Love them
Undecided/Neutral
Dislike them, they do not bring anything to surfing
Hey all. I was watching the latest dvd that came with tracks which was for the rip curl pro at bells over easter. There was a segment on slaters boards and it showed what the other top seeds thought of his tiny tiny quad fin boards. The comments varied from some who liked them, some who wanted him to keep using them so that he would not win. Someone else (I forget who) said he was riding them really well but because of the size of the board the turns did not look as big and also that the nose was covered in water most of the time he was riding.
I am also in the process of reading pipe dreams because I have not surfed for six months now from injury and I am going nuts. In pipe dreams slater talks about his first board which had boxes allowing the thruster shape, however it was in the days of either single or two fin boards. He basically says that by no means was he innovative in the invention of thrusters but it was something that he experimented with before the thruster was unleashed.
So that lead me to think, what do you all think of his new quad fin 4' something boards. Personally I think that it is great that he is trying something new and I also think that the problem with surf contests is that the way of judging does not always allow for new and more innovative ways of surfing. I think that perhaps slaters style of boards may lead to a new revolution in surfing but I think that for now, the surfing community is not quite ready for it when our comps are still judged mostly on wild turns and the lines that a surfer paints on the 'canvas' that is a wave.
