American surfers made their presence felt at the Hang Loose Pro held at Fernando de Noronha in Brazil. With a combination of three South American Surfers and Three North American Surfers along with a Frenchman and a Spanish surfer reaching the quarter finals of the 2008 competition. Past winners of the event were all knocked out in the three to five foot conditions on the famous Cacimba do Padre Beach.
Surfers Brett Simpson and Nathaniel Curran have the chance to take the lead on the World Qualifying series rankings today, the current leader of the rankings Patrick Gudauskas was knocked out by Raoni Monteiro in the previous heat. The second heat of the semi finals will be between Breatt Simpson of America and Jonathan Gonzalez of the Canary Islands, whilst the third heat will involve Nathaniel Curran of America and Hizunome Bettero of Brazil who was undoubtably the best surfer on the Saturday. French Surfer Tim Boal and another American Gabe Kling will also do battle in the other. There is 1.500 points up for grabs and a prize of $12,000. Brazilian Surfer Wilson Nora won his heat against Simao Romao and will face Raoni Monteiro in the first of the quarter finals. With strong local support he looks forward to doing well.

The other Brazilian with promise of taking home the title is Hizunome Bettero, he had earlier beaten the winner of the Hang Loose Pro in 2001. As he looks forward he will face the American Nathaniel Curran in the third quarter final. Nathaniel Curran was on fire scoring the best wave of 9.93 in the same heat as Hizunome.
